Captive International’s Cayman Awards 2020

Best in the captives class

Welcome to the results of Captive International’s second Cayman Awards. Over the following pages we reveal the winners and highly commended awards for 2020, which identify the most influential and highly regarded institutions and individuals active in Cayman’s captive insurance industry.

“Whether they are based in Cayman or elsewhere, all the winners know Cayman well.”

Across the following pages, Cayman International is delighted to unveil the findings of our 2020 awards, the second year that we have published awards for Cayman’s captive community.

These results are the culmination of a three-month long research project into the captive insurance sector in Cayman. Our goal was to identify the leading companies and individuals working in or contributing to Cayman’s vibrant captives community.

To achieve this, we used a mix of online surveys sent to readers of Captive International and phone interviews with select contacts that have been developed since 2004 when we first published Cayman Captive magazine—the forerunner to Cayman Focus.

The aim of the survey was to gain a detailed understanding of which companies and individuals, spanning all the sectors essential to the Cayman captive insurance market, are highly regarded within their respective fields—and why.

We have used quantitative and qualitative measures in our analysis—looking at how many votes each company or individual received, as well as at what value scores were given to them.

We asked survey participants why they made their choices, to ensure that our results were not dominated by the largest companies. We were able to identify companies with a smaller client base who provide an exceptional level of service.

Once all the votes were counted, our editorial team sense-checked each vote and interview notes, validating all votes by unique contact details and removing votes where people had nominated themselves. We then calculated results that factored in the pure number of votes and the qualitative scores.

We were always keen that this research project would represent more than a simple popularity contest determined by market share alone. This was the reason we always asked respondents why they chose certain companies and asked them to score their choices based on service levels. This allowed respondents to comment on quality regardless of market share.

Connected strength

The results of the survey underline, as they did last year, the international and interconnected nature of the insurance industry. These are Cayman-focused awards, and many of the winners live and work in Cayman, but some do not. Award winners such as Graystone Consulting or SIGMA Actuarial Consulting are based in the US but do a lot of business with Cayman’s captives.

Whether they are based in Cayman or elsewhere, all the winners know Cayman well, and are in turn well-known by participants in Cayman’s captive insurance market.

We feel that our survey and awards represent an honest and unbiased assessment of how different companies and individuals are perceived in terms of their different qualities.

The data do not represent in any way the opinion of Captive International but we are comfortable that our research process and methodology was comprehensive and detailed enough for this to present an accurate picture of the market at this point in time.
