Tiang & Partners hires partner to lead IP practice

Hong Kong law firm Tiang & Partners has hired partner Chiang Ling Li to head its IP practice.

Li has more than 25 years of experience in Chinese IP and pharmaceutical law and has advised clients on litigation and transactions involving patents, trade secrets, copyright, unfair competition, 3D marks and well-known marks.

She will be joining from Jones Day, where she served as a partner. In this role, she represented clients in a variety of complex patents and trade secrets disputes across the life sciences and healthcare sectors.

Wilson Sonsini hires veteran IP litigation lawyer

Amy Candido has joined US law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati as a partner in its San Francisco office.

She will join the firm’s trial and IP litigation practices from California-based law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.

Before joining Quinn Emanuel in 2005, Candido began her legal career at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York.

With more than 20 years of experience, Candido is a trial lawyer who focuses on high-stakes, complex patent, trade secret, and other IP litigation. She has successfully represented clients in numerous jury trials, and bench trials before the US International Trade Commission.

“Amy is an outstanding lawyer with an impressive track record in high-profile IP trials, as well as a trusted advisor to technology companies of all sizes involved in challenging legal and business disputes,” said Doug Clark, managing partner at Wilson Sonsini.

Volvo’s IP officer to head Harness Dickey

Law firm Harness Dickey has appointed former Volvo IP officer Ray Millien as its new chief executive officer (CEO).

During Millien’s almost 25-year legal career, he has served as in-house counsel across the automotive, energy, financial services and healthcare sectors, and he has gained experience in general practice and boutique IP firms.

He will replace the 100-year-old firm’s first CEO, Bill Coughlin, who will become CEO emeritus.

Ray Millien

Before his stint at Volvo, Millien led the IP function at GE Oil & Gas (now Baker Hughes), American Express and GE Healthcare. He has also served as general counsel at Ocean Tomo and practised IP law at DLA Piper and Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox.

Under Millien’s charge, the firm will focus on innovation and operational efficiency, utilising a work-life balance ideology inspired by Millien’s experience at the Swedish automaker, according to the firm’s announcement.

Latham hires ex-Skadden IP litigator

Latham & Watkins has hired former Skadden Arps litigator Anthony Sammi to join the firm’s New York practice as partner and global vice chair of IP litigation.

Sammi specialises in tech litigation with experience in patent, trade secrets, trademark and copyright disputes.

He has represented clients across several industries, including video games, oil and gas, software, telecommunications and pharmaceuticals at both district and appellate courts.

“Tony has a well-earned reputation as a powerhouse IP lawyer, with an excellent track record both in and out of the court room,” said David Callahan, global chair of Latham’s IP litigation practice.

Sammi has also led trials before the US Patent Trial and Appeal Board and has counselled international clients on evaluating licensing and protecting IP portfolios.
