“Captive insurance management, in particular, requires a varied and transferrable skillset.”
Jennifer Pooley started her career at KPMG London auditing commercial re/insurers before moving to KPMG in the Cayman Islands, auditing captives. She has since worked at Strategic Risk Solutions (SRS) Cayman for 13 years where she has taken on the role of managing director and chief executive, subject to regulatory approval.
Pooley was described as consistently delivering solutions for clients and organisations alike to advance client objectives, expand the client portfolio, and promote the stability of the Cayman Islands captive insurance industry.
Her eight years of involvement with the Insurance Managers Association of the Cayman Islands Forum committee has provided abundant leadership opportunities to spearhead events that showcase the Cayman captives sector.
Here she describes how she sees the captive insurance industry changing and developing, the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that lie ahead.
Do you feel that the captive insurance industry is a rewarding sector to work in?
Yes, it is a constantly evolving sector that responds to the ever-changing needs of different industries. It allows those who work in the sector to gain a unique insight into how the companies in those industries operate and work with a range of clients in different professions.
Would you recommend the captive insurance industry to young people as a future career path?
Definitely. There are a multitude of opportunities within the captive insurance industry whether in captive insurance management, actuarial, audit, etc. Captive insurance management, in particular, requires a varied and transferrable skillset.
How do you feel that the captive insurance industry will evolve?
The captive insurance industry will continue to adapt to meet areas of growth such as employee benefits, cyber and the evolution of insurtech. In the healthcare professional liability market, the exponential increase in “nuclear verdicts” will likely drive further developments in captives for healthcare.
Do you think that your long-term future remains in the captive insurance industry?
Absolutely it does. My career at SRS has been and continues to be extremely rewarding and I look forward to the new challenges that the industry continues to bring.
