ADAM MIHOLIC

Senior consultant, Hylant Global Captive Solutions

“The sense of community and common interests has always been one of the most rewarding parts of the captive insurance industry.”

Adam Miholic started as an outsider to the insurance and business community in general when he became a client executive at a small agency back in 2011. He quickly found an interest and passion for the captive insurance industry and started focusing all his time as a consultant in that vertical shortly after.

Through various organisations including Marsh, Assurance, and now Hylant Miholic has specialised in consulting and advising for new captive formations and strategic expansion efforts for the past 11 years.

Miholic was described as having demonstrated his ability to lead both at his company, Hylant, and as a founding member of the CICA NextGen committee. As a senior member of the Hylant Global Captive Solutions team he has assisted leadership in growing the division to nearly three times its revenue and number of managed captives in under five years—taking Hylant from a little-known captive management company to one of the top 15 in the world.

Here Miholic describes why he likes working in the captive insurance industry, why the sector leads the way with innovation and how he has no plans to leave it.

Do you feel that the captive insurance industry is a rewarding sector to work in?

Yes. I have often mentioned to individuals within and outside the captives industry that my peers and competitors have become more “friends” or “mentors” than anything else. We truly are a niche within a niche in the insurance industry and the sense of community and common interests has always been one of the most rewarding parts of the captive insurance industry to me.

Would you recommend the captive insurance industry to young people as a future career path?

Yes, I would.

How do you feel that the captive insurance industry will evolve?

Captives have always been the leader in terms of innovation within the overall insurance industry since their creation. The inherent flexibility and control they provide to their insureds speak directly to their benefit in both hard and soft markets. In terms of relevance I am very happy to see efforts being made in many captive jurisdictions to expand the legislation and make it more widely accessible to organisations of all sizes and industries.

I truly believe that a well-managed captive insurance company can become the core of an organisation’s risk management programme.

Do you think that your long-term future remains in the captive insurance industry?

Yes definitely. There are so many opportunities inside the captives industry, and I have personally been so rewarded working in it for over a decade that I have made a conscious decision to remain for the duration of my professional career.
