Twenty years of Captive International

As we look at the lifetime of this publication we can see two decades of life, evolution, and growth.”
Celebrating 20 years of anything can come as a shock, due to that sudden recognition of such a significant passage of time. Looking back 20 years inevitably brings up memories of past times, both good and bad. For me, as I look back, I realise that I have been writing about insurance now for 21 years, a little longer than this publication has existed.
Where did the time go to? The list of past editors is a long one: Nick Comrie, Wyn Jenkins, Owen Faulkner, Solomon Teague and others have all come and gone, leaving a rich legacy of achievement.
Twenty years therefore seems like a lifetime ago—and as we look at the lifetime of this publication we can see two decades of life, evolution, and growth. Looking back at the first edition of the magazine and contrasting it to the latest publications has been an education in itself.
The lessons that we have all learned over the past two decades are sobering ones. In 2004 words such as ‘COVID’ and ‘pandemic’ were ones that you read only in textbooks or worst-case scenarios. Hurricane Katrina had not yet laid waste to New Orleans, mortgage-backed securities were part of the small print in financial reports and Brexit was not a word that anyone could recognise.
How times have changed—and how much has changed for the captive insurance industry. The number of captives has spiralled upwards and an increasing list of domiciles are getting in on the action, as laws and legislation are tweaked to attract captive insurance business.
Captive International has grown and changed over this period, just as the industry has. And I have to point out a vitally important point—we could not have done this without you, the readers of this publication. The amount of engagement and involvement that you provide has helped us to make Captive International into what it is now after 20 years.
What does the future hold? It would be a very bold and brave editor who would dare to try and predict the future, but I think I can speak for many here at Captive International when I say that we will go onwards and upwards. This year we will have the second version of our FORTY Under 40 publication; our awards, in Cayman and the US, are going from strength to strength; and there are our usual publications.
Captive International will—as usual—be reporting from some of the biggest conferences and other events of the year.
I’d like to pay tribute to those we have lost over the past two decades, to retirement, resignation and, most sadly, death. I think we all know people who are much missed at some of the annual events. So, before you move onwards into reading this publication, please take a moment to think about those absent friends who cannot be with us in 2024 and beyond. They are much missed.
Marc Jones, editor, Captive International
